Riding Hamsterly for a day just wasn’t enough for us so we decided we had to go for a ride at Innerliethen (coupled in with a Christmas family visit to see my uncle in Galashiels) which is definitely the best place to race that is doable in a day out from my house.
We set off super early and arrived to perfect blue skies and dry frosty trails. My mum drove up and brought my middle brother, Andrew, who went for a walk during the day whilst we rode.
We spent the first hour of the morning sessioning some of the best jumps at Inners over on the Matador run which involved trying to sent it as far as possible of the 2nd jump then slowly headed up the hill to find some classic Innerliethen tight and twisty trails in the woods.
The best part of the day was the run right before lunch where we decided to do a full run all the way from the top to the bottom, I was following Harry and at some point I had to stop to put my chain back on and lost Harry. I had no idea where he had gone or which trail he had chosen so I just made my own way down to the bottom, there are just so many trails in the woods here that you are constantly passing tracks disapearing away into the woods out of the corner of your eye, I followed whatever looked like most fun. I guess i caught Harry up a little as as we rode down we could both hear each other at various points as the trails we were following came closer together then drifted apart again but we never saw eachother. It was such an adrenaline rush hearing him buy knowing if he was about to burst out onto my track or not or feeling like racing each other buy no knowing who was ahead. We both emerged at the bottom laughing to eachother, completely out of breath… ‘which trail did you take?!’ … ‘I’ve no idea but it was awesome!’ … ‘ahahaha’… ‘ok time for some soup’
After lunch some of Harry’s friends that he knew from riding up here so much turned up and joined us for a few runs, it is so often the case, you just ride with whoever and make friends so easily when you both have a bike.
