A very last minute ride! Two guys from Grenoble had asked me if I wanted to go riding with them today but I was supposed to be spending the afternoon with a friend, however they phoned and said they could not make it 20 minuted before they guys were supposed to be leaving as they had lost the key to their bike lock. A very quick call to Sylvain and a dash across town and they only had to wait 10 minutes for me, although I didn’t have time to put together a proper bag, only throw a few tools and bits and pieces in my pocket.
We were going to ride Ferme Durand which I have done plenty of time but the good thing was that these guys knew how to get up to the top without using the main road, which I was keen to learn since the road up is pretty busy and the drivers are not so courteous!
The trail we took from the city up to the top was 100 off road and a perfect gradient, despite me snapping my chain very close to the bottom and Sylvain kindly donating a split link suggesting it was way steeper, my chain is simply on its last legs I think. We wound our way up the hillside at a pretty decent pace (these guys are fit) and a rather nice chilled out gradient up to the mast above Ferme Durand which you can see from the city.
Unfortunately the view from the top was pretty terrible because of the pollution in the city, not a good sight. You feel pretty helpless, would be nice to be able to do something about it but it is also a nice feeling that I have been in a vehicle a maximum of 3 or 4 times since I arrived in Grenoble, using my bike to go everywhere, so green points for me!
The descent was BONE dry, and actually a bit slippery because of the amount of dust. Since it was dry all part of the descent was cleared safely which have caused me troubles on previous attempts!
Just after this section these guys showed me a pretty cool section which is a tiny little singletrack in and out of the trees which is very tight and really makes you work for your money! Very nice option however.
The last part of the descent was one I have done quite a few times now (and clearly these guys had two) so we hit it as what felt like warp speed to begin with, jumpin large sections of rocks now that I feel I know whats coming, a lot of adrenaline pumping! Especially when I hit the little rock drop in the park at the bottom and majorly nose dived, heart in your mouth moment there!
